It all started at
age 15, somewhere between hang gliding off Saddleback Mountain and
becoming proficient in photography, he found his passion in an
introductory jewelry making class. By the time he graduated he
had a steady clientele among the teaching staff and was well on his
way to becoming the artisan he is today. Twenty-five years
later that clientele has been joined by an ever-growing loyal group
of patrons even to the second generation.
Self taught,
imaginative, innovative are all words that come to mind when
describing this iconoclastic jeweler - designer. After
spending 20 years in his craft, working for other designers and
salons in the area Robert became a freelance artist preferring a
more personal touch to his craft. He has exhibited for the
past nine seasons at the Festival of Arts and Laguna Beach
Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach California. Robert’s
goal is to be retained by exclusive, discriminating collectors
worldwide who appreciate and demand the finest in artisanship,
exclusivity of design and the availability of a personal
jeweler. The collector who knows and wants the difference
between mass production and custom is his valued
patron.
Robert is a hard
driving, perfectionistic, multifaceted artisan. He is not
content to do something well and leaving it there. He strives
for perfection. He constantly pushes the envelope of his skill
level in every area of interest. He takes risks. He
devises better, more creative ways to resolve design
challenges. If it can be done, he can do
it.
Robert thinks
outside the box. When confronted with the execution of
design challenges he fabricated his own tools. By trial and error
found better ways of setting stones. When faced
with challenges of finding the right stones that measured up to his
exacting standards he learned faceting from an old dentist with
a crazy parrot who lives in a haunted castle in
Laguna . When fatigued from long hours at the bench he
built a Harley Davidson Chopper (machining parts he designed) that
appeared in Hot Bike magazine. Then he built a wooden
three-man kayak. Needing a peaceful break he raises koi
fish as a hobby and learned everything he could about Koi down
to studying microbial causes for infection and
disease.
Diamonds or
Harleys, Gold or Koi, Faceting or Kayaking - Everything he puts his
hand to he does with the same thirst for understanding, creative
ingenuity and motivating drive that makes him truly an interesting
person to know.
Robert is a
soft-spoken man with an astute grasp of his patrons’ desires.
In the design of their pieces, he understands. A fine
piece of jewelry is an expression of personality.
It is a reminder for generations. Many a
customer has burst into delighted tears when first seeing their
finished piece. Often years later patrons call just to let him
know how much they are still enjoying his work and to perhaps order
another.
Robert prides
himself on going the extra mile with his creations to the delight of
his patrons. He understands their desires and respects their
input. He involves them in the creative process. He goes
out of his way to make himself flexible and available during off
hours by appointment. Life and art happen at all
hours.
In a rare sunny
day, you might find him paddling his kayak outside the breakwater in
Dana harbor looking for seals and whales and
inspiration.
He is always a
cell call away.
